When looking at non-computer based technology in an early childhood classroom, I feel that the most important device would be an over-head projector. This device plays a huge role for the teacher because it allows them to show the class different media that is enlarged for everyone to see. Instead of running off handouts or passing around pictures for everyone to look at, projectors offer a way for children to see the desired object all at once. Teachers can leave up directions on an activity that the children are doing so that they can look at what they need to do next.
Another non-computer based technology in an early childhood classroom would be a dry erase board. I think this is an important aspect of every classroom because it offers a way for teachers and children to communicate with each other. Dry erase boards can act as a huge drawing canvas for children during different activities or they can serve teachers in being able to make reminders that the children need to see such as homework assignments or the class schedule.

Lauren,
I think that over-head projectors are a great non-computer based technology as well. I thing it is a great way to save paper and also a way for the class to work as a whole. Hopefully in the schools we work in, we can be lucky enough to have things like the “white board” like we have in our class now, and we can use that to put things up rather than having to mess with the projectors themselves and copying information onto the special paper etc. But most of us I am sure will not always have that great benefit on our side. Dry erase boards are great too; not just for teachers but for students as well. In my high school we had individual dry erase boards as well as a big one for the class. It was something different and it was a way for us to practice math problems rather than just using a paper and pencil all the time. I have the hardest time thinking of a tool that would not be good to use in the classroom. Of course there are non-computer based technology tools that are better than others, but when used the right way, I think any tool can come into handy. Can you think of any that would have a negative affect on the classroom, and not be good to use in an early childhood classroom? Good luck the rest of the semester! We are almost done, thank God!

I like that you chose to simple technologies to use in the classroom. When I was in elementary school, I remember using a projector and chalk board. I loved it when the teacher would let us write on the chalkboard, but that did not happen often. As I said before, they are simple, but that does not mean they are not important to the classroom.
I completely forgot about the over-head projectors. I absolutely think they are great! They are so simple but make certain things very simple for teachers. I love how students can see examples of work or notes on the projectors. Student love to get up and write on them too! Now, the smart board has increased that technology and taken learning to a bigger step!
