This picture of a cow could be used for a language arts lesson for a first grade classroom. I would make a print out with this picture followed by lines that the children would write on. The children would use this as one of their journal entries. They would use this picture as a prompt for a creative writing story. The children would have to write a story while including this cow by giving it a name, location, and/or any characteristics it may have. When the children are done writing their story, they would then share what they have written with the class. This exercise could introduce a unit on farm animals. After the children are done sharing the stories, I could read the book "Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type" by Doreen Cronin.

Your idea is a great way to begin a lesson on farm animals. For your story, would you have the students create a fictional story about the cow? or would you have the students write something a little more informational? Along with this, you could provide more pictures of farm animals and have the students write about them as well. Or you could have the students, as a group, create a list of farm animals and see how many they can come up with!
I love the idea how having the picture of a cow used as a journal assignment. The whole journal could be pictures of farm animals that the students either write fictional stories or write information about that animal. That would be great for a lesson on farm animals.
A great field trip would be a trip to a farm! Some kids have never been to a farm and I am sure they would really enjoy going! You could have the students take their own pictures of farm animals that they see on the trip and then take them back to the classroom and write a story about their animal in their picture!
I really like how you tied all of this in nicely. Maybe you could even tie in a little diversity. Have different pictures of cows:some spotted, some brown, some white, etc. Then kind of tie it into how people are diverse too or something like that. But I really like how you get the students to start thinking about farm animals.
I really like your idea. I think it's a really good way for young children to start learning about life on the farm! You could also have a computer game that deals with farm animals, like a matching game or something, that kids can play to reinforce what they have already learned through your lesson. Your idea is really fun and cute!!
